Structural monitoring of the stadium roof in Sosnowiec
Sosnowiec, Poland
Description
Structure
Zagłębiowski Park Sportowy in Sosnowiec is a modern football stadium with a stand roof made of sheet metal on a steel truss structure. The facility is in daily use — monitoring operates continuously during stadium operation.
Challenge
The building project required structural monitoring of the roof. Commissioned by Carbo Automatyka — a subcontractor to the general contractor (Bielskie Przedsiębiorstwo Budownictwa Przemysłowego S.A.) — we designed and implemented an extended monitoring system covering full diagnostics of the steel structure.
Key requirements:
- Continuous measurement of structural loads, including snow and wind loads
- Monitoring of deformations and displacements of truss girders
- Monitoring of column tilts and foundation settlement
- Integration with the existing stadium BMS
- Online data view with automatic safety alerts
Solution
Measurement infrastructure
The system comprises over 70 measurement points distributed across 5 roof sections, monitoring truss girders (including DZ-2, DZ-9, DZ-10, DZ-15, DZ-19) and the boiler building.
Seven sensor types were installed:
- Strain gauges (O) — 16 sensors measuring steel structure stresses [MPa]
- Temperature sensors (T) — 16 steel surface temperature sensors for temperature compensation
- Inclinometers (I) — 14 dual-axis tilt sensors monitoring column and joint geometry
- Accelerometers (A) — 12 three-axis acceleration sensors for structural vibration analysis
- Displacement sensors (P) — 8 sensors measuring structural element displacements
- Snow mass sensors (S) — 5 roof snow load sensors [kg/m²]
- Hydroleveller (H) — foundation settlement sensor
Additionally, a weather station was installed measuring air temperature, humidity, dew point, wind speed and direction.
Platform and integration
Sensor readings refresh every five seconds. Each measurement point has defined alarm thresholds — displacement sensors display real-time safety status.
The monitoring system was integrated with the local stadium BMS via the Modbus TCP protocol, allowing facility technical staff to access monitoring data directly from the building management system.
Results
- Continuous 24/7 monitoring of the roof structure condition
- Automatic alerts when safety thresholds are exceeded
- Full integration with the building management system (BMS)
- Structural condition documentation for periodic inspections
- Safe facility operation with continuous load monitoring
